As per orders of the Delimitation Commission, No. 198 Tarakeswar (Assembly Constituency) is composed of the following: Tarakeswar Municipality, Tarakeswar Community Development Block, and Bhanderhati I, Bhanderhati II, Gopinathpur I, Gopinathpur II and Perambua Sahabazar Gram Panchayats of Dhaniakhali Community Development Block and is a part of No. 29 Arambagh (SC) Pariliamentary Constituency. It is located at 22°53′N 88°01′E. It has an average elevation of 18 meters (59 feet).
Over the years, Tarakeswar holds a traditional place of pilgrimage and the greatest centre of the Shiva sect in West Bengal. 58 km away from Kolkata, it is well-connected to Kolkata both by road and rail.
Taraknath Temple of Tarakeshwar is one of the prominent pilgrimage centers in West Bengal. This temple dates back to the 18th century. Legend has it that a devotee by name Vishnu Das emigrated with his clan from Oude (Ayodhya) and was viewed with suspicion by the locals. It is believed that he proved his innocence by holding in his hand a red hot iron bar. Later, his brother discovered a site in the nearby jungle, where cattle discharged the contents of their udders (milk) at a particular spot each day. Upon investigation, they discovered a Shivalingam. A dream is said to have revealed to them that this Shivalingam was a manifestation of Tarakeshwar – Lord Shiva … the Param Bramh… the primordial and ultimate force of the universe…the source of everything. A temple was built at this spot, and was renovated in subsequent years.
Pilgrims visit the temple throughout the year, especially on Mondays. But lakhs of pilgrims around the corners of India visit Tarakeswar on the occasions of ‘Shivaratri’ and ‘Gajan’, the former taking place in Falgun (Feb-March) while the latter lasts for five days ending on the last day of Chaitra (mid-April). The month of Sravana (mid-July to mid-August) is auspicious for Shiva when celebrations are held on each Monday.
The Howrah-Tarakeswar railway line was opened in 1885. Earlier, Tarakeswar was also a terminal for the narrow gauge Bengal Provincial Railway. It is part of the Kolkata Suburban Railway system. Tarakeswar Railway Station has been declared as a Multifunctional Station. The present Railway Line between Sheoraphully and Tarakeswar is being extended to Bishnupur, Bankura. At present, EMUs in the Howrah-Tarakeswar line is available every hour.
